If your job involves lifting and carrying (and this includes farms and building sites, in factories, offices, warehouses, hospitals, banks, laboratories, home delivery couriers and even child care settings where staff will regularly pick up and carry babies and small children), then your well-being and health will be protected by a variety of legislation including ‘The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992’.
This legislation specifically requires employers to ensure staff are trained to lift correctly so as to reduce back strain and injury caused through work related tasks (more than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported each year to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) are caused by manual handling).
The legislation continues in further placing responsibility on the shoulders of the employer in requiring that they seek to avoid the need for any manual handling of potentially health threatening loads or items in the first instance, instead assessing the likelihood of potential injury first and whether manual handling of an object can at all be avoided (always the preferable choice). Should an employer deem it necessary to manually lift a load, then they must reduce the risk of injury as far as is reasonably possible prior to an employee doing so.
With the cost of paying injured staff whilst unable to work falling on the employer, together with the cost of paying additional staff hired to cover their absence, it is vital that businesses not only ensure adequate manual handling training, but that safe lifting procedures are at the fore thought of any employee undertaking manual handling/lifting duties. This can be achieved by the display of relevant signage that helps remind the employee of the correct lifting procedures, including body position and maximum weights to be lifted.
Displaying manual handling signage is simple and cost effective. Signs are fabricated using strong plastic in usually A5 or A4 size and printed in vibrant primary colours that stand out and have great visual impact. A safe working environment is essential to any successful organisation and exceptional quality health and safety signage therefore underpins this.
